Japan Provides Fund for Seven Projects in the Republic of Vanuatu

The Government of Japan will provide total funding of US$587,122.00 for seven projects in the Republic of Vanuatu through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Grant Contract, formalizing Japan’s assistance, was signed between the recipient organisations and Mr. Yukihiro Tsujimura, the Second Secretary for the Japanese Embassy, on Monday 9th February 2009 (Time to be confirmed later) at the Department of Foreign Affairs office in the Republic of Vanuatu.

Japan’s assistance to these projects indicate its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Republic of Vanuatu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. A total of 52 projects valued at US$2,147,929 have been funded under this program from 1996 to 2006 in the Republic of Vanuatu. 9 projects valued at US$655,584 were funded in Japanese Fiscal Year 2007 and 8 projects valued at US$668,254 were funded in 2008.

It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of Vanuatu and Japan.
