Project Titles

Good afternoon to you all.

It is my honour to be here this afternoon, to represent His Excellency, the Ambassador of Japan to the representative of Vanuatu, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, in today’s official handing-over ceremony of a new two classroom building and furniture to the Kawenu Primary School. I am delighted today because this project has given me an opportunity to travel to this beautiful country.

Education provides the human resources needed for social and economic development, and also contributes to poverty reduction by improving the capacity of individuals to make a living. Thus, the Government of Japan has decided to make every effort to prioritize the development of basic education by improving and upgrading the facilities of a number of schools in Vanuatu.

As for the school, the rapid increase in the population of Port Vila has made it quite difficult to enrol all the children who wish to be moved up to class 7 and 8 because of the shortage of classrooms. Even if some of those students do enter the school, some are forced to use temporary classrooms or divide one classroom to share the facilities.

It is hoped that our GGP programme would help resolve this difficulty in the years to come. We all understand the importance of education and that investment in the education sector such as this project will benefit, not only individuals, but also the community and the future generations as well.

To the teachers, parents and the management committee of Kawenu Primary School, I am confident that you will exercise good care and maintenance of the school facilities and equipment provided today as well as allow the students to enjoy the best education at this school in the years to come.

To conclude, it is my hope that this assistance from the People and the Government of Japan will reaffirm our friendship with the People and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu. With these few words, I officially open the new classrooms and handover the new furniture.

Thank You. (Tank yu Tumas.)
