Project Titles

Good morning to you all.

It is my great honour to be here this morning, to represent His Excellency, Mr. Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan , in today’s official opening of the new Butchery and Fish market house for the Malampa Province. I am deeply honoured and express my appreciation for your generous hospitality and the warm welcome extended to me this morning.

This project, as many of you would know, was funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme, which is also known as the GGP programme and it is designed for projects that will in turn help Grassroots people improve their lives and create better opportunities.

Most of the people in the Malampa Province make a living, either by farming or fishing, and they trade their fresh products at the market. However it is not so easy to buy and sell fresh meat and seafood at reasonable prices because there is no common market centre in the province. Besides, the butchery house in Lakatoro was closed due to unfavourable conditions in 1999.

In acquiring a better hygienic centre to facilitate fresh  meat and seafood trade in the local community, the Malampa Provincial Council had requested the Embassy of Japan for funding assistance to construct a butchery and fish market house. With the strong effort and mutual cooperation between Malampa Provincial Council and the Embassy of Japan, this new fully equipped market house has finally been completed. The Embassy of Japan is confident that the new market centre will promote trade in the area. As a result, the economy in the Malampa Province would be greatly enhanced.

In conclusion, it is my hope that this assistance from the People and the Government of Japan will reaffirm our friendship with the People and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu. With these few words, I officially open the new facilities at Lakatoro market place.

Thank You. (Tank yu Tumas.)
