Japan Provides for Upgrading Works on Power Supply Facilities in Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu
Embargo: Tuesday,20th February 2007 – 10.00 a.m.
The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the people of Tuvalu under Japan’s General Grant Aid Scheme.
On Tuesday, 20th February, 2007 at 10:00 a.m, Mr. Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu, will officially open the newly restored Electric Power Supply system. The cost of upgrading the electricity generation facilities is JP¥ 925 million (approx. US$7.5 million).
The funding assistance for complete overhaul of power supply facilities including generation and distribution network was given with aims to ensure stable and reliable power source and to prevent frequent power failures and overload on facilities, becoming impediment to economic growth and development in Tuvalu.
Japan’s assistance to this project indicates it’s reaffirmed commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Tuvalu and is in line with Japan’s commitment made at PALM 2006 which was held in last May in Okinawa, Japan, and more so, its Official Development Assistance policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen friendly ties between the governments and the peoples of Tuvalu and Japan.
