Japan Provides Funding for Improvement of Disaster Risk Management Equipments to the Republic of Vanuatu

Press Release No: 25/2012

Date: Friday 20th of April 2012

The Government of Japan provides funding on equipments for Improvement of Disaster Risk Management to the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu of approximately Three hundred million Japanese Yen (JPY 300,000,000). The Exchange of Notes for this project will be signed between the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, H.E. Mr. Eiichi Oshima, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu, Honourable Mr. Sato Kilman to formalise Japan’s commitment towards this project. The signing ceremony will be hosted by the Government of Vanuatu in Port Vila at 2.00pm on Monday 23rd April, 2012.

This Grant Aid scheme is aimed at promoting international co-operation in the field of disaster management by providing equipment for disaster management based on Japan’s experience on last year’s Great East Japan Earthquake.

Japan recognises the hardship Vanuatu experienced during the recent earthquakes and cyclones that caused many homeless, forced evacuations and cut off road access and even resulted in casualties. Japan and Vanuatu are vulnerable to natural disasters. Therefore, the provision of facilities to forecast weather will assist Vanuatu in predicting earthquakes, cyclones, flood-tide, tsunamis and climate changes.

In addition, Japan will commence implementing the “Vanuatu Seismic Network Project” under its Technical Cooperation scheme this year, aiming at transferring Japanese techniques of managing and maintaining its seismic systems. These projects will produce multiplier effects in saving more lives and allow time for people to prepare ahead for future disasters.

Simultaneously, Japan will support other Pacific Island Countries including Vanuatu in the field for Disaster Risk Management through its Regional Technical Cooperation. This contribution from the Government of Japan to the Vanuatu people will provide an opportunity to promote the importance of appropriate upgrading and maintenance of Disaster Management facilities.

Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Vanuatu and it is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the Governments and the people of Vanuatu and Japan.
