Japan Hands-over New Tug Boat for Port Vila Main Wharf

The Government of Japan continues to provide grant assistance for improvement of basic infrastructure facilities in Vanuatu. The people of Vanuatu will witness the official handing-over of the new tug boat for vessels using Port Vila main wharf facilities. The funding of this major project in Vanuatu was made available through Japan’s General Grant Aid scheme.

The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, H.E. Yutaka Yoshizawa was present in Port Vila on Monday, 7th February 2011, at 9.00 am to officially hand-over the new tug boat that ensure safety compliance while manoeuvring bigger vessels.

A grant of JPY 1,707 million (approx. 1,785 million Vatu) was made available for the upgrading works at the wharf. In accordance with the detailed design based on the previous Exchange of Notes dated 28th of January 2008, the upgrading works at Port Vila main wharf included construction of concrete decks, pavement of cargo handling area, Westside and Eastside shore protection, administration office, rehabilitation of the shed for loose cargoes, improvement of lighting facilities in the port area, lighting buoys and procurement of pilot and tugboats. The improved facilities of the port now fully comply with world maritime safety standards and strengthened maritime transportation capacity. Future promotion of trade and tourism of Vanuatu will be enhanced by this rehabilitation work and contribute towards realising steady economic development and improving people’s livelihood.

Following a request from the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu of the need for the smooth entry, berth and exit of domestic and international vessels using Port Vila Main Wharf, the Government of Japan decided to provide the grant aid for this project under its bilateral development assistance programme. This grant aid is in line with Japan’s objective to provide sustainable and constructive support for the development of projects that contribute to the improvement of essential infrastructural facilities and, thereby, promote socio-economic development and better people’s livelihood.
