Speech for the Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for GGP Projects in the Republic of Vanuatu (For Health Project)
By: Mr. Yukihiro Tsujimura, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, Tuesday 21st September 2010 (15:00 hrs)
- The Project for Provision of Vanuatu National Vaccine's Storage to Ministry of Health
Good Afternoon to you all,
Today, I am delighted to represent the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, H.E Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, in formalising Japan’s funding assistance for installation of new Vaccine's cold room storage to Ministry of Health.
The Embassy of Japan is honoured to be given the opportunity to provide assistance to install the Vaccine's cold room storage. The existing storage facility does not have enough space to stock vaccines, and has the possibility of deterioration by keeping vaccines at unstable temperature. I believe that the new cold room storage facility will enable Ministry of Health to provide a reliable cold chain, and deliver safe vaccines to remote island children.
The funding for this project is in line with Japan’s Official Development Assistance policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme, commonly known as GGP, is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include basic education, water supply, health, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. Japan, since the inception of this programme in 1996 till 2009, has provided funding assistance to 76 projects in Vanuatu.
I am thankful that the Government of Japan was given the opportunity to fund the project. The new Vaccine's cold room storage will ensure to protect children against such as Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus. With this assistance, I am confident that it will further strengthen the close ties between the governments and people of Japan and Vanuatu.
Finally, with these few words, I look forward to the proper installation of new Vaccine's cold room storage in the near future and hope that the recipient organisation will make the most of this assistance for the benefit of the people of Vanuatu. In addition, I would like to thank the management and staff of Ministry of Health and the staff of the Expanded Program on Immunization Unit for their kind help and assistance rendered in the formalisation of this project.
