Japan Provides New Water Supply System to Tanakia area and School Buildings to Two Primary Schools in the Republic of Vanuatu

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to rural sectors, which benefits villages, as well as public organization, such as schools, hospitals, and NGOs, in the Republic of Vanuatu. The communities of Tanakaia area, Erakor Primary School and Lalukoko Primary School celebrated the handing-over of new water supply system and provision of new school buildings. These projects were funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yukihiro Tsujimura  represented the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, to officially open the new water supply system at Tanakia Area (South East of Epi Island) , as well as to hand over the new school buildings to Erakor Primary School (Efate Island) and Lalukoko Primary School (Malakula Island).

 

Details of the projects and their handing over ceremony schedules are as follows:

1. The Project for Water Supply for Tanakia Area

A grant of US$ 76,517.00 (approx. 7,650,000VT) was given to cover the material and construction costs of the water supply system (5000 gallon tank, two 2000 gallon tank, pipes and taps). This project is expected to benefit around four hundred people in Tanakia area.


 

 

2. The Project for Upgrading of Erakor Primary School

A grant of US$ 85,247.00 (approx. 8,520,000VT) was given to cover the material and construction costs of new two classrooms, new school furniture, equipment and a new water tank for the students and teachers. This project is expected to encourage the children of the area to excel academically and achieve success.

 

 

3. The Project for Upgrading of Lalukoko Primary School

A grant of US$ 81,950.00 (approx. 8,170,000VT) was given to cover the material and construction costs of new two classrooms complex, new school furniture, equipment and a new water tank for the students and teachers. This project is also improve the literacy level among the members of the society.

 

   

 

Japan’s assistance in these projects indicates its commitment to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of the people in the Republic of Vanuatu and it is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure.  It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the peoples of Japan and Republic of Vanuatu.
