Press Release No. : 40 / 2011

Date : Tuesday, 1st November, 2011

The Government of Japan continues to provide grant assistance for the project for improvement of medium wave radio broadcasting network and disaster prevention in Tuvalu. The people of Tuvalu will witness the official handing-over of the new transmitter house and radio station building equipped with modern technology for a reliable public broadcasting service in Tuvalu. The Government of Tuvalu received grant assistance in the sum of approximately JPY 801 million (approx. US$10.4 million) from the Government of Japan through its General Grant Aid Scheme.

The Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa will be present in Funafuti on Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, at 8.00 am to officially hand-over the new broadcasting facility.

The main purpose of the Grant Aid (GA) assistance was to prepare a comprehensive design to rehabilitate the only public broadcasting service in Tuvalu and ensure a reliable means of information communication and a steady radio broadcasting service for the people on distant atoll islands through construction of a new radio station building and transmitter house along with the provision of a new Medium Wave (MW) antenna system, MW transmitter, master control system, studio/editing equipment and others. In addition, wholesale renewal of equipment by latest digital equipment under the project required basic knowledge of handling of this equipment and to ensure appropriate operation and maintenance, the Japanese contractors as part of this project also conducted basic training programmes.

This GA is an added milestone in Japan’s ongoing support and cooperation towards the development and prosperity of Pacific Island Countries including Tuvalu and it is anticipated that the friendly ties between the Governments and the people of Japan and Tuvalu will continue to strengthen.
