Press Release No. : 24/ 2010

Date: Wednesday, 16th June, 2010

The Government of Tuvalu received grant assistance in the sum of approximately JPY 801 million (approx. US$8.7million) from the Government of Japan for the project for improvement of medium wave radio broadcasting network and disaster prevention in Tuvalu. The funding is sourced from Japan’s Grant Aid (GA) scheme.

The ceremony of the Exchange of Notes for this assistance was held in Suva on 16th June 2010, where Hon. Apisai Ielemia, the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, and H.E. Yutaka Yoshizawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu, signed and exchanged notes formalising Japan’s commitment towards the project.

The assistance had materialised from the request by the Government of Tuvalu.  The main purpose of the Grant Aid (GA) assistance is to prepare a comprehensive design to rehabilitate the only public broadcasting service in Tuvalu and ensure a reliable means of information communication and a steady radio broadcasting service for the people on distant atoll islands through construction of a new radio station building and transmitter house along with the provision of a new Medium Wave (MW) antenna system, MW transmitter, master control system, studio/editing equipment and others. In addition, wholesale renewal of equipment by latest digital equipment under the project will require basic knowledge of handling of this equipment and to ensure appropriate operation and maintenance, the Japanese contractors as part of this project will also conduct basic training programmes.

This GA is an added milestone in Japan’s ongoing support and cooperation towards the development and prosperity of Pacific Island Countries including Tuvalu and it is anticipated that the friendly ties between the Governments and the people of Japan and Tuvalu will continue to strengthen.
