Japan Provides Funding Assistance for Major Upgrading Works in Dilkusha Methodist High School and Nairukuruku District Primary School, Fiji.

Press Release No: 26/2012

Date: 4th April, 2012

The Government of Japan provides assistance worth F$301,640.00 to Dilkusha Methodist High School and Nairukuruku District Primary School through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, H.E. Eiichi Oshima will sign grant contracts with Mr. Joji Nakaora, the Principal of Dilkusha Methodist High School and Mr. Pauliasi Taura, the Head Teacher of Nairukuruku District Primary School to formalise Japan’s funding assistance to these projects. The signing ceremony will be hosted by the Embassy of Japan in its conference room at Level 2 of BSP Life Centre, Suva, at 10am on Friday 4th April, 2012.

Details of the Project are as follows:

1. The Project for Upgrading of Dilkusha Methodist High School

Dilkusha Methodist High School in Nausori receives F$140,000 from the Government of Japan for construction of 3 new classrooms and provision of furniture. The school was established in 1996 and accommodates around 474 students. The old wooden building currently occupied by three classes of Form 3 students is too old with many holes on the floor and leakages on the ceiling, which requires immediate attention. The new classrooms will be built to replace the old building.

2. The Project for Upgrading of Nairukuruku District Primary School

Nairukuruku District Primary School in Naitasiri also receives F$161,640 from the Government of Japan for the construction of a seven pan toilet, dining hall, kitchen, and classroom renovations. The school was established in 1960 along the Wainimala River in the highlands of Naitasiri and accommodates around 120 students from the villages of Sanawai, Wainikovu, Waisevuga and Dreketi. The new facilities will greatly assist the school by replacing the sub-standard deteriorated classrooms, dining hall, kitchen, toilet and offer best services for the children of Naitasiri.

These projects will greatly improve classroom environment, providing human security and equal opportunities for the students of recipient schools to achieve academic excellence.

The Government of Japan believes that by providing assistance directly to recipients in Fiji not only ensures effective use of the grant, but also achieves Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy objective of promoting development at the grassroots level. Japan acknowledges basic education as the key to socio-economic development and hopes to contribute in the improvement of the daily lives of the people of Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects Programme (GGP). The Embassy is hopeful and confident that such cooperation will serve to strengthen the friendly ties enjoyed by the people and governments of Japan and Fiji.
