Japan Provides Funding Assistance to Lomaivuna High School

Press Release No: 47/2012

Date: 27th November, 2012

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Lomaivuna High School will celebrate the opening of facilities that were funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme.

The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, H.E. Mr. Eiichi Oshima will officially handover 3 new classrooms with furniture to Lomaivuna High School, culminating Japan’s funding assistance to the project. The handing over ceremony will be held at Lomaivuna High School on Wednesday, 28th November 2012 at 10.00 a.m.

Lomaivuna High School was established in 1972 in the remote area of Naitasiri providing education from Forms 3 to 7, to around 325 students from the surrounding areas. The Lomaivuna school buildings are in very deprived state which is dangerous to be occupied under the relevant regulations. Moreover, the Form 3 classrooms are in worst condition with falling roof and missing floor liners, risking student lives and teachers mobility.  As a result, the school formally requested the Embassy of Japan for funding assistance through its Grant for Grassroots and Human Security Programme (GGP).

The Government of Japan, under the GGP scheme, provided a grant of approximately F$140,000 to cover the building materials and construction costs for the 3 classrooms with furniture to assist the school to cater for all students and provide a safer learning environment. The project will not only improve classroom environment, but also provide equal opportunities for students to achieve academic excellence.

Japan recognises education as one of the largest elements supporting human security. Investments in education will not only benefit individuals but the community at large, and not only for now but also the future generations. The Government of Japan remains confident on assisting more Fijian educational institutions in the future.
