Japan Donates a New Back-hoe Loader to Labasa Town Council for Improvement of Public Health Management

Press Release No: 44/2011

Date: 1st December 2011

The Government of Japan provides assistance worth approximately US $124,000.00 to Labasa Town Council through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

His Excellency, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa will sign the grant contract with Mr. Vijay Chand, the Special Administrator of Labasa Town Council, to formalise Japan’s funding assistance to the town council at 10.30 a.m. on 2nd December, 2011 at the Embassy of Japan’s Conference Room at Level 2, Dominion House, Thomson Street, Suva.

Labasa Town Council receives a total of approximately US $124,000.00 to purchase a brand new backhoe loader for the emerging population of Labasa. After getting official declaration in early 1930’s, Labasa Town became the largest commercial and industrial centre in Vanua Levu with the current population of over 10,000. The town has an area of more than 135,568 hectares but like other Municipalities around the country, Labasa Town Council is also faced with financial constraints due to defaulting rate payers and enormous town rate arrears that providing effective and efficient essential services such as maintenance of drainage, garbage collection and green waste management becomes even more difficult when hiring services from private contractors which proofed to be very uneconomical and unreliable. The Council, to date had to hire equipment including diggers to maintain the drains around the Municipality area. The new backhoe loader will ease the financial burden on the Labasa Town Council’s budget, and improve the Council’s operations and efforts to manage the natural environment.

The Government of Japan believes that by providing assistance directly to the people of Fiji will not only result in being utilised effectively, but also achieve Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy objective of promoting development at the grassroots level. Japan acknowledges the importance of maintaining a sustainable environment to build a better Fiji for all.  It is hoped that this assistance will strengthen the friendly ties enjoyed by the governments and the people of Japan and Fiji.
