Good morning and Muju dola Vina

It is my pleasure to officiate in today’s handing over ceremony of the water project in your village funded by Japan. I am also delighted and wish to express my gratitude for the warm reception extended to me this morning.

Water is a basic need, and, lack of access to regular supply of water particularly, in rural areas greatly affects the livelihood. A good water supply system not only relieves the hardships faced by villagers but also, provides an opportunity for grassroots to build modern facilities such as flush toilets, proper bathrooms and enjoy a comfort and hygienic life. This project, in fact, is timely for the people of Nadrala especially when the demand for water is high with the increasing population in the village.

I am deeply touched by your perseverance and patience all along despite having only a few common taps as source of water.
I am also confident that the new water supply system funded by the Government of Japan will ensure an efficient and a regular water supply for the whole community.

I am proud that the Government of Japan was given the opportunity to fund this project and establish good relationship with the people of Nadroga/Navosa province. In fact, this is the third water project funded by Japan since its fiscal year 2008 to 2009, and I am confident that the new water supply system will encourage healthy living by ensuring safe water supply for the whole community.

To be able to provide flexible and timely support to development projects at the grass-roots level such as this project, the Japanese Government offers a financial assistance scheme for development projects designed to meet the diverse needs of grassroots in developing countries. Known as Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme, this scheme supports projects proposed by bodies such as Schools, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Local Government Authorities.

To conclude, this assistance is a reflection of Japan’s goodwill and friendship to the people of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, and, while helping development of such projects, this assistance will contribute to strengthen the friendly ties between our two countries, Japan and Fiji.

With these few words, I officially open the new water supply system and congratulate the people of Nadrala for being the recipient of this wonderful Christmas gift from the people of Japan.

Thank you and Vina Valevu Jina.
